Curriculum Intent Statement for Assemblies using Picture News
At North Walsall Primary Academy, our assemblies form a central part of our wider curriculum, supporting pupils to become Worldly Wise, resilient, and compassionate individuals who are ready to make a positive difference in society.
Through Picture News, we provide children with opportunities to engage with current affairs and real-world issues in a safe and structured way. Our intent is to ensure that assemblies:
- Develop critical and reflective thinkers – Pupils are encouraged to question, discuss, and analyse events and issues, learning to recognise different perspectives and form balanced, informed opinions.
2. Foster values and character – Picture News helps us embed our school values of Perseverance, No Opt-Out, Worldly Wise, and Achievement, showing children how these values apply in daily life and the wider world.
3. Promote global citizenship – By connecting classroom learning with local, national, and international issues, pupils develop empathy, respect, and an understanding of diversity, equality, and social justice.
4. Strengthen communication and confidence – Assemblies give children the chance to listen actively, share ideas, and debate respectfully, ensuring every child has a voice.
5. Support SMSC and British Values – Picture News provides a platform for exploring spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development, while reinforcing democracy, the rule of law, liberty, respect, and tolerance.
6. Inspire action – Our assemblies are not only about awareness but also about empowerment. We want pupils to feel confident that their ideas and choices can make a difference in their school, community, and the wider world.
Through this approach, assemblies at North Walsall Primary Academy prepare pupils to be thoughtful, knowledgeable, and active citizens who live out our values both inside and outside of school.
